Maharashtra is one of the most developed states in the country. However in terms of health it is much worse than the nation. 40 % of children under the age of 3 are underweight (India 45.9%), almost 38% of children are stunted (India - 38.4%) and Wasting affects 14.6% of children (India 19%) in Maharashtra.
“The feeding practice for children aged 6-9 months shows an alarming pattern with only 48% of children aged 6-9 months receiving solid or semisolid food and breast milk. This is significantly lower than the national average of almost 56%.
To tackle this situation, we are establishing model crèches for children below six years. The focus will be on under-3 to improve nutritional status and encourage early education. These will also cater to adolescent children.
The Tathapi run crèches will be
1. A model to demonstrate the highest possible standards in
- Child health, nutrition
- Early education
- Overall development and child care
2. Secular, Self sustaining, cost effective and replicable model that respects local wisdom and diverse cultures.
3. A support structure that facilitates a change in KAPS (related to child care) and greater independence and freedom to women.
We have begun with migrant children as they need urgent attention and action. With the support of AEI Luxembourg through TdH Germany, we are starting four centres in Kala Khadak, an urban slum in Chinchwad. The teachers and assistants belong to the same locality and community. We are thrilled to have the little ones with us and hope to engage parents in our activities soon.
Volunteers are welcome!
